What is Pharyngoplasty?

Pharyngoplasty surgery is done to improve snoring. First the tonsils are remove if they are not already done and also the uvula and part of the soft palate.

Why do LAUP?

If you snore surgery may improve the condition.

No, it’s your choice, but the snoring will continue.

How is the operation done?

Once you are admitted to hospital the morning of surgery, you will be taken into theatre where you will be given a general anesthetic to sleep. The tonsils are removed orally using special tools and the uvula and part of the arches of your throat removed with Laser CO2. The operation takes approximately 60 minutes.

How many days will stay in the hospital?

You need to stay overnight.

Can there be problems from surgery?

The LAUP is very safe surgery. However, every operation has a small risk. The most common problem is bleeding. It happens about one in a hundred cases and is usually treated in the doctor’s clinic. Very rarely you may need to go back for surgery. During the surgery, there is a very slight chance of injuring a tooth. Sometimes food can come back out of the nose, but this will only last for a short time and then subside. The operation may not relieve your snoring completely and the snoring may come back over the years.

What to do after the surgery?

Have two weeks rest at home while your throat heals. Go back to work then.

What can I eat after surgery?

You should eat soft foods initially and gradually add foods in your diet that you can eat.

Will I have pain after surgery?

Yes, but this is encountered with painkillers.

Will I have pain in my ears?

Yes this is expected. It does not mean that you have otitis. Your throat and ears share the same nerves. It does not mean that you have an ear infection.

What would I do if I have bleeding?

If you have persistent bleeding should call your Doctor immediately.
